Online Spending on Christmas Day Increases
According to predictions from ‘the voice of e-Retail’ IMRG, UK consumers are set to spend £186.4m online on Christmas day this year, with forecasts for boxing day set to reach £367.8m. Both figures an increase on last year.
A growing list of major retailers have announced discounts of 50% or more in sales to start as early as Christmas Eve. John Lewis will start its sale online on Christmas Eve at 6pm whilst Argos and Superdrug will start theirs at midnight. IMRG suggest retailers are pushing sales on their websites early to tempt people into making purchases before items go out of stock.
Although Christmas day may not seem like an obvious day to go online to make purchases, IMRG argue that people will be going online anyway as more people are accessing the web via desktop and mobile to send Christmas messages on social networks.
David Smith, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer at IMRG, said: "Although shopping on Christmas Day might not appear to quite be in the Christmas spirit, it is worth considering that many of these sales could actually be associated with popular gifts people have received, such as downloadable content for MP3 players and Kindles."
