Name:
Jamie Robb
Job Designation:
Web Developer
Short Job Description:
Build new websites, support existing websites and help out with any other techy issues where possible, e.g. domains, hosting etc.
Question: Describe your workplace:
Casual and a good laugh. The office itself is great - lots of room and Kelvingrove Park on the doorstep!
Question: What has been the biggest challenge of your career?
It's been said before but getting my foot in the door was the biggest challenge of my career - it took two and a half years after I first graduated from university before the kind folks at Radiator gave me my first career break. During that time I returned to university to do a post-graduate diploma and even worked on a couple of websites voluntarily to get some experience.
Question: What skills are needed?
Definitely need to be a good problem solver - lots of different types of projects come through the door and each can bring a new challenge. As a developer you obviously also have to have a great grasp on coding - I met people during my time in university who couldn't even grasp simple computer programming concepts.
Question: What has been your career highlight?
Probably building my first full asp.net website all by myself - I was well chuffed with it!
Question: Where do you see yourself in the future?
I see myself in the future as I see myself now - in the mirror of course...where else would I see myself?!?
Question: What advice would you offer to those looking for a similar career?
Experience counts for pretty much everything - you could have a first class honours degree in computing but if you don't have any commercial experience of working on websites then you'll struggle to get a job.
Question: What do you do to unwind after work?
I do enjoy lying on the sofa watching TV, but if I'm out and about I'll often be found in Blackfriars, Bon Accord or a Wetherspoons pub, enjoying a pint of real ale. I've also developed a fondness of camping over the last couple of years, although in Scotland that's only really feasible in the "summer"...
